I bought one of the Belgian-made 9mm Browning Hi-Powers, in Dec, 1967. Its serial # indicates it was manufactured some time that year. The dealer sold it to me for $104.50, and tossed in a 50 round box of 9mm, and a spare magazine (cheap knock-off, but functions well). The gun has always performed without any jams or other problems. The thing that attracted me to Browning guns most, was there beautiful blue finish, and the fine walnut grips & stocks: most of all, they were an invention of John M. Browning. I don’t care at all for the Springfield knock-off copy. The “improvements” listed are all to things which have never caused me a problem. Never involved in any situation where I needed to drop a magazine while shooting, never had a “hammer bite”, because I always gripped the pistol correctly. The safety mech never was a problem to me. The matte finish on the Springfield, allegedly to make the gun more “tactical”, was actually a cost-saving step in manufacture. “Tactical,” to me, means AR-15 & clones. Now, the firearms magazines and commentators have bought into the “assault weapon” tag of the anti-gun crowd. No armed force in any nation now carries a semi-auto rifle into combat. I bought an AR-15, not because I needed, or wanted one, but because Obama wanted to keep us from having them. Now that I have it, I enjoy tinkering with it. It’s easy to take down, and doesn’t get scratched like one of my walnut and blue steel guns. Yes, I might use it in home defense, but my actual plans for that situation include my 12 ga. Mossberg loaded with 9 rounds of alternating 00 buck, and #4 shot, the #4 being in the chamber. No home invader is likely to be wearing armor, and the #4 will stop any normal human, but the follow-up 00 buck will blast even a drug-laced imbecile back about 10 yards.
